Review: OZZFEST Rocks On In West Palm Beach, Perhaps For The Last Time

August 29, 2003

Sean Piccoli of South Florida's Sun-Sentinel reports that the rumor that the Ozzfest 2003 stop at Sound Advice Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach Thursday (August 28) might be the last of its kind had some folks sounding almost wistful. "Dottie and Mike O'Neill, spouses from West Palm Beach, were reminiscing on Thursday afternoon about previous Ozzfests as they considered that heavy metal's biggest summer bandwagon might be retired by its road-weary star, Ozzy Osbourne.

" 'We were here the year MARILYN MANSON rubbed himself against a security guard,' said Dottie, 23, who works for a medical billing company, 'and the year LIMP BIZKIT got angry at the crowd.'

"What golden memories would emerge from this year's encounter, the last stop on perhaps the last touring Ozzfest, could only be imagined. But MANSON was on the bill again, back home where he had spent his teens as Brian Warner and had devised the creepy rock persona that would bring him a place among the headliners.

"Even he indulged a little nostalgia on Thursday at the event west of West Palm Beach.

" 'I used to drive my mom's car in West Palm Beach,' he told a crowd that had surpassed 10,000 by midday and was still growing. 'Now I drive underage girls.'

"Manson limited himself to bad punchlines, some hijinks with a microphone and a ghoulishly theatrical set with his band and erotic dancers. There was no repeat of the obscene gesture of a few years back that resulted in a lawsuit by the offended security guard. But the Ozzfest crowd had its own, somewhat milder exhibitionist streak showing." Read more.
